Game #2 Report – Saturday Dec. 8th:
Huskies 4, EWU 3
The Huskies lost another player to an
injury and played with a team stricken with the flu, which resulted in
them coming out flat in the first period of the second game against
Eastern Washington. The Eagles took note and played strong as the Huskies
scrambled. UW took an early penalty at 19:40 but the Eagles did not
convert. The play rushed back and forth with good plays, tough defense and
impressive shots by both teams. Then it was EWU’s turn to be a man up at
8:35, but they did not score either. In the last two minutes of the period
the Huskies went on a power play but did not put the puck in the net. The
first period ended with a 0-0 score with each team taking 13 shots on net.
EWU had 6 penalty minutes to UW’s 2 minutes.
The Huskies started the second period on a power play but the Eagles
killed it. EWU went up on the scoreboard first at 11:23 on a 3-on-3 rush
to the net. The Huskies tied the score at 9:29 when Shaun Lawrence back
checked in the EWU zone, stole the puck and passed to a wide-open Sean
O’Brien in front of the net. O’Brien was able to walk from left to right
around the goalie and score. EWU came right back at 6:43 when they scored
on a slap shot. But the Huskies refused to lie down and scored at 5:31
when Charlie Walter set up Marty Boyd on the far right post. Boyd put the
puck in the net while falling to the ice. And the final goal of the period
was scored by Sean O’Brien when he took 2 defenders on, beat them and then
beat the goalie in the 5-hole. The score was then 3-2 at the end of the
second period. Huskies took 16 shots on net to the Eagles’ 12 shots.
Neither team had any penalty minutes.
The third period the Huskies looked tired and was resolved to keep their
lead. However, EWU scored to tie the game at 17:50. The Huskies put their
game in second gear but could not sink the puck on 2 power plays at 17:25
and 14:01. It wasn’t until 8:19, on a man advantage, when Brett Lawrence
set up Sean O’Brien who repeated the exact move from the second period to
score on a dropped goalie, for his first Husky Hockey hat trick. The teams
at 3:58 then went on 4-on-4 play but neither teams converted. EWU pushed
in the final minutes of the period to tie the game but the Huskies kept
control and the puck deep in the zone to clinch the win. Final score was
4-3 in favor of the Huskies. UW took 10 shots on net to the Eagles’ 4
shots. The Huskies took 4 minutes to the Eagles 10 minutes.
