UW vs
Eastern Washington University - Home
Game #1 Report – Friday Dec. 7th:
Huskies 5, EWU 3
Still down players due to injuries, the
Huskies hosted a talented Eastern Washington University (EWU) for the
first a 4 game home and away series. The first period was a solid and
speedy match by both teams. Passing was crisp and in-zone set-ups were
strong by both squads. The Huskies went up on a power play at 18:40 but
they failed to convert. At 16:05 Brian Mead skated directly to the net and
jammed the puck in for the Huskies first goal. EWU went up on a power play
at 15:26 but the stingy defense of the Huskies prevailed. The Husky
defense continued to disallow shots on goalkeeper Scott Southard
throughout the period. The EWU squad seemed hampered with penalties, which
the Huskies took advantage of. The Huskies went up on a man advantage at
12:25, and then went up by 2 men at 11:29 as EWU took another penalty. At
11:44, on a power play and from a face-off in the EWU’s zone, Husky Matt
Carlson passed the puck to Brett Lawrence who sent it back to Carlson on
the give-and-go play. Carlson then scored in the lower right hand corner
of the goal. The game continued to be tight and in the final seconds of
the first period EWU took a few more penalties in the remaining seconds.
In the first period the Huskies took 23 shots to EWU’s 3 shots on net. EWU
took 14 minutes in penalties to the Huskies 2 minutes in penalties (don’t
worry folks, the refs - quote - “even things up” in the third period).
The second period the Huskies had a 5-on-3 advantage for the first minute
and a 5-on-4 advantage for 3:35. In the first minute Brett Lawrence, in
the high slot, passed to Shaun Lawrence on the far right side, who waited
for the goalie to drop and wrapped the puck around the front from left to
right. The Huskies scored at 18:54 on another 5-on-3 advantage when
defenseman Randy Shigetani passed across the blue line to defensive
partner Bryce Kennedy, who took a slap shot on net, which was jammed in by
Brian Mead on a goalmouth scramble. EWU then went up on a power play at
16:47, which was killed off by the Huskies. At 15:55 EWU was able to
convert on a power play when they scored their first of the night. The
Huskies and Eagles then traded penalties, which neither team could put in
the back of the net. At 8:30, on a UW power play, Brett Lawrence skated
across the high slot, passed the puck back to Matt Carlson who scored
around the goalie from left to right, as he lost his feet and glove. EWU
then took a few more penalties to end the period but the Huskies could not
convert. The period ended with the Huskies leading 5-1. In the second
period the Huskies took 21 shots to EWU’s 8 shots on net. EWU took 8
minutes in penalties to the Huskies 6 minutes in penalties.
The third period the Huskies were stricken
with penalties as EWU was in the first. At 19:20 the teams played 4
against 4. The Eagles then scored on a power play for their second goal.
They then turned around and killed a UW power play. At 8:26 the teams
played 4-on-4 again and at 6:57 the Eagles had the man advantage. EWU were
up on another power play and scored on 5-on-3, for their last goal of the
night. However, EWU saw two more power plays, one where they pulled the
goalie in the last minutes of the game to have a 6-on-4 advantage. The
game ended with the Huskies winning 5-3. EWU took 20 shots on net to the
UW’s 3 in the third period. The Huskies took 14 minutes in penalties to
EWU’s 2 minutes.
