  Husky Hockey Preseason Workout Camp
By Bradley Dobbs

August 29, 2003

(Lynnwood, Washington) - With the core of the Husky Hockey team
present, training for the upcoming 2003-2004 PAC8 Conference and
American Collegiate Hockey Association season got underway at
Lynwood Ice Arena.

The team’s preseason conditioning camp, as coined by Head Coach Cindy
Dayley, was essentially a “laying of the groundwork” for training for the
players as tryouts loom in a month. The schedule consisted of some off
ice training, a two-hour skate, and finally some strength training courtesy
of CrossFit North (www.crossfitnorth.com).

The training regimens created by Coach Dayley and Coach Zoë Harris
were guidelines for the players so they knew how to prepare themselves
for the upcoming try-outs on October 1st.

The session was split into three elements, beginning with some
cardiovascular work, which came in the form of various sprints and warm
up exercises. After a final run around the arena, the team entered the
locker room to change for their two hours of ice time.

On the ice, no breaks were allowed on the two-hour sheet. Players were
instructed to grab the available water along the boards when needed,
but no formal breaks were scheduled due to the high cost of ice time.
While on ice, players were run through a series of skating, skills, and
conditioning drills, and capping off the two hours were three-on-three
scrimmages.

The final segment of the conditioning camp was a strength-training
workout courtesy of CrossFit North. A series of medicine ball throws,
kettle ball lifts, and modified squats through a circuit were used; a
workout designed to help with explosiveness on the ice. Players lined up
in a row and each went down the circuit to conclude the training session
for the night.

“The guys did a really good job. We put them through the paces and they
lasted” said Coach Dayley about the session that lasted four and a half
hours. Dayley was also impressed with the talent she found on the ice
that night. “This is one of the most talented summer camps we have had,”
said Dayley.

Team Captain Brett Lawrence was also impressed with what he saw on
the ice during the session. “The new guys looked really good. I have very
high hopes for the season,” said Lawrence of the new faces that came
out.

With the high turnout and the quality of the new players trying out for the
Husky Hockey team, both Coach Dayley and Captain Lawrence are very
excited for this upcoming season. With workouts in mind, the team
prepares for the team tryouts starting October 1st at Olympicview Arena,
and the season opener against Central Washington University on October
10th – 9:45pm at Olympicview.

A Registration Meeting, for all players interested in trying out, is schedule
on campus ~ Sunday, September 28th at Mary Gates Hall at 1:00pm.
